What is the Procedure??
The patient is provided with an initial sedative to be taken shortly prior to attendance. Once the patient arrives at the appointment, the dentist will provide another sedative to put the patient to sleep. At this time, the dentist will be able to complete the required procedure without the patient experiencing any fear or discomfort.
What types of sedatives are used in sedation dentistry?
Medical advancements have allowed dentists to provide their patients with depressants, tranquilizers, gases, and other medications that provide the desired effects. Patients do not have to worry about receiving the drugs through the use of a needle because the medications can typically be taken orally.
Does sedation dentistry leave me with any numbing feeling in my mouth?
Sedation dentistry is not to be confused with local anesthesia. Dentists need to administer local anesthesia when working on a specific tooth in order to prevent the tooth and gums from sending pain signals to the brain. Sedation dentistry allows the patient to undergo any dental procedure without fear or panic.
Do you feel anything when you undergo sedation dentistry?
The whole purpose behind sedation dentistry is to make sure that each patient feels comfortable about his or her dental procedure. Therefore, dentists will administer the sedatives to the necessary level of relaxation. Patients that have undergone sedation dentistry report that they did not feel a thing and believed the procedure took only minutes to complete.
Can I drive myself to and from the appointment?
Due to the power of the sedatives, dentists will not allow patients to drive to and from the appointment. A companion is required to be with you to ensure that you arrive safely.
